A Modern Approach to Networking

In the past, advisors used networking to gain clients by flipping through a Rolodex. In more modern times, we reach out to people via LinkedIn.

However, I find that I am more successful when seek connections without the primary goal of forming new business connections. I prefer to work towards long lasting relationships.

To do this, shift your focus from gaining contacts to forming real connections with people. We know that clients want to do business with people they know and trust.

Good networking involves having authentic conversations with interesting people.

We always hear that networking is important, but have you really explored the benefits of successful networking? When we network we are:

  • Strengthening relationships
  • Exploring fresh ideas
  • Opening new doors
  • Facilitating the exchange of information
  • Earning visibility
  • Widening our support network

1. Keep it personal

We’re living in a time when everything is online. Personal touch and meaning can easily get lost.

Go the extra mile by:

  • sending hand-written thank you cards, or even birthday cards to long-time clients
  • offering exclusive promotions to customers
  • simply calling clients to check in and see how they’re doing from time to time.

However you choose to add a personal touch, make sure you genuinely sincere!

Another great networking tool is getting involved in community outreach and events. Volunteer with an organization or cause meaningful to you. You will give back and get to know others at the same time!


2. Be authentic

This one will take some work.

You’ll need to create a client-centered yet authentic statement, while delivering it in a way that does not sound memorized.

The key here is to speak in a way that clients will understand.

If you try to “outsmart” clients, you’ll likely turn them away. Evaluate your approach by taking some time and reflecting on these questions:

  • How can you stand out from competitors?
  • What is your distinct personality?
  • What statements can only you make in your promotions and marketing communications?
  • What statements do competitors not mention in their promotions and marketing communications?

3. Host a (non-traditional) event 

It’s 2018 and people want more unique content and experiences.

In recent years I’ve had to alter my approach when it comes to connecting with my audience.

Try hosting a fun and compelling event! In the end, you want guests to leave happy and ready to share their experience with others.

People will always choose to work with the person they know and trust. Clients will choose a trusted advisor who will go above and beyond for them.

Creating an authentic and successful networking approach means taking some time to reflect on your personal brand and future goals.
